SD Card (Secure Digital) »  What is the difference between SD Card and MMC?

SD and MultiMediaCards are very similar in size and design but there are some differences.

Secure Digital (SD Card)

  • A 2nd generation form of the MultiMediaCard
  • It has a security feature for copyright material
  • An SD Card has a Write-protect switch to prevent accidental erasure of data
  • SD Card is generally faster than MMC card
  • An SD Card will not generally work in a MultiMediaCard device
  • Currently higher capacities of SD Card are available

MultiMediaCard (MMC)

  • A MultiMediaCard will normally work in an SD Card slot where copyright protection is not required
  • MultiMediaCards are normally a lower cost option
